How to Set Up a Fire TV Stick: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
Amazon's Fire TV Stick turns any TV with an HDMI port into a smart TV. This guide shows you how to set up a Fire TV Stick from scratch. The steps are the same for the HD, 4K, 4K Plus and 4K Max models, and at the end we cover the most common problems and how to fix them.
What you need before you start
- A TV with a free HDMI port (for 4K, ideally one that supports HDCP 2.2).
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password. For 4K streaming, aim for at least 15–25 Mbps.
- An Amazon account (if you don't have one, you can create one for free during setup).
- A plug socket near the TV.
How to set up your Fire TV Stick: step 1, plug it in
- Plug the stick into an HDMI port on your TV. If there isn't enough room, use the small HDMI extender that comes in the box.
- Connect the power cable to the stick and to the official power adapter, then plug it into the wall. Avoid powering it from the TV's USB port: it often doesn't supply enough power and can cause dropouts and restarts.
- Switch on the TV and use its remote to select the HDMI input the stick is plugged into (HDMI 1, HDMI 2…). You should see the Fire TV logo.
Step 2: pair the Fire TV Stick remote
Put the batteries in the remote. It usually pairs automatically. If it doesn't respond, press and hold the Home button (the house icon) for 10 seconds until the screen confirms it's connected.
Step 3: language and Wi-Fi
Choose your language, select your Wi-Fi network and type the password using the on-screen keyboard. The Fire TV will then check for software updates and install them automatically. This can take a few minutes and the stick may restart. That's normal.
Step 4: sign in to your Amazon account
A code will appear on screen. On your phone or computer, go to the web address shown (for example amazon.com/code), sign in and enter the code. You can also type your email and password directly with the remote. If you bought the stick from Amazon, it may already be registered to your account.
Step 5: TV controls and preferences
The setup wizard will offer to let the Fire TV remote control your TV's volume and power. It's worth doing, so you only need one remote. After that you can choose whether to turn on parental controls and backups.
Step 6: install your first apps
- On the home screen, go to Find (the magnifying glass) or the Apps section.
- Type the name of the app you want.
- Select it and press Download or Get. It will then appear on your home screen.

How to set up a Fire TV Stick without a remote
If you've lost the remote or it isn't working, download the official Amazon Fire TV app on your phone (Android and iPhone). It works as a remote control, but only once the Fire TV is already connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone. For the initial setup, you can also try your TV's own remote if the TV supports HDMI-CEC. An official replacement remote doesn't cost much and is the easiest fix.
Common problems and fixes
- Blank screen: check the TV is on the correct HDMI input and that the stick is plugged into the mains.
- "Insufficient power" warning: use the original power adapter instead of the TV's USB port.
- Remote not responding: take the batteries out, put them back in and hold Home for 10 seconds.
- Slow Wi-Fi or buffering: use the HDMI extender to move the stick away from the back of the TV, or move your router closer.
- Setup taking ages: it's usually downloading updates. Be patient and don't unplug the stick.
Bonus tip
If the videos that autoplay on the home screen annoy you, go to Settings → Preferences → Featured Content and turn off video and audio autoplay.
